Jigsaw puzzle cut types describe the pattern of the pieces: ribbon or grid layouts form recognizable rows, while random or irregular layouts vary their shapes and arrangement more. Whimsies are recognizable figure-shaped pieces, not a material or manufacturing method. Read the exact maker's description and a clear cut image together. Neither the cut label nor a photograph proves tight fit, freedom from false placements, or a particular difficulty.
The useful question is not how many impressive words fit on the box. It is which words describe the layout, which describe individual shapes, and which describe how the object was made. Those are separate entries on a buying record.
This is a desk-researched guide to reading those entries, not a report of hands-on puzzle testing. It covers ordinary flat jigsaws and selected specialty features, rather than every historical cutting classification.
How do ribbon, grid and random cuts differ?
MasterPieces describes ribbon-cut pieces as broadly square or rectangular forms arranged along a grid, and random-cut pieces as more varied in shape and size. Its comparison also makes the important point that either can feel easy or challenging to different solvers. MasterPieces' cut explanation is maker guidance, not a universal grading standard.
Look past the projecting connectors when judging the underlying shape. A piece with a roughly rectangular body does not cease to belong to a row-based layout because its tabs curve.

Terminology can be less tidy than this table. SOONNESS uses grid cut as an alternative name for ribbon cut. That is useful vocabulary, but when a seller distinguishes them, read that seller's definition rather than correcting the listing from memory. Describe what the photo actually shows: aligned rows, offset junctions, broad shape variation, or a mixture.

Does ribbon cut mean two tabs and two blanks?
No. A tab is an outward connector; a blank is a corresponding inward recess. Counting those features describes an individual piece, not the whole cut.
SOONNESS's terminology guide lists several familiar four-sided arrangements, including all inward connectors, all outward connectors, and two outward connectors that are adjacent rather than opposite. It separately defines the orderly ribbon layout. The distinction matters: a row-based puzzle can have considerable connector variety. SOONNESS: Jigsaw Jargon supplies the vocabulary and examples, not a requirement that every puzzle contain each arrangement.
Here is a purely hypothetical drawing exercise. Imagine a rectangular arrangement of three rows with four pieces in each row. That makes twelve piece positions. The arrangement tells you where the rows lie; it does not tell you which side of any shared boundary has the tab. Changing that connector direction can leave the same three-by-four layout intact.
Do not transfer this example into a piece-count prediction for a real box. Specialty borders, irregular layouts and the maker's actual design need their own information. The exercise only separates a layout from the connectors drawn within it.
What are whimsies, shaped borders and dropouts?
A whimsy is a recognizable figure in the cut, such as a bird or flower. The outline creates the figure; a bird printed across an ordinary rectangular piece is not, by that fact alone, a bird-shaped whimsy.
Wentworth describes themed whimsies in most of its adult wooden puzzles and identifies its repetitive-piece Extra Difficult range as an exception. Its guide also describes combining whimsies with its Free Form and Vine cuts. That is a clear example of features coexisting rather than competing for one label. A shaped border concerns the finished perimeter. Wentworth's separate irregular-piece guide describes designs following an illustration's contour and warns that some cuts include straight edges inside the puzzle or lack conventional corner pieces. A dropout is different again. Stave's glossary uses the term for intentionally empty space incorporated into the design. Its color-line cutting follows a boundary between colors, while its irregular edge concerns the perimeter. These are Stave's documented techniques, not labels that should be assumed from any unexplained gap. Stave's glossary shows the distinctions.
Before concluding that a gap is deliberate, confirm it in the exact design's description or reference. Before reporting it as missing, make the same check. An uncertainty belongs on the record as an uncertainty, not as an improvised explanation.
Why is laser-cut not the opposite of random-cut?
Laser-cut describes a production method; random-cut describes a layout. Wood describes the material. A specification can therefore use all three without contradiction.
Wentworth's whimsy page identifies laser cutting for its wooden puzzles. Stave, by contrast, describes cutting its wooden puzzles individually by hand with a saw. These examples establish that wooden does not mean laser-cut, nor does hand-designed necessarily mean each finished piece was cut manually. Stave's account of its craft is specific to its workshop.
There is a similar distinction in cardboard production. Ravensburger describes hand-drawn templates and handmade punching tools. Accordingly, record the following separately:
- Material: what the maker explicitly names.
- Method: punched, laser-cut, individually hand-cut, or unspecified.
- Layout: the arrangement visible in the cut.
- Surface: the stated paper or finish.
- Special features: whimsies, an unusual perimeter, intentional spaces, or other documented design elements.
None of these fields needs a speculative entry. “Unspecified” is more informative than mistaking a textured surface for a cutting technique.
What can a product photograph actually tell you?
A picture of the artwork alone tells you almost nothing about the cut. A generic puzzle-piece icon is also weak evidence: it may be packaging decoration rather than an actual piece from that edition.
For a useful inspection, find an assembled-puzzle photograph, a clearly identified cut diagram, or a close view of several joined pieces. Then distinguish the image's source. A maker's diagram explains the intended design; a photograph of an individual copy shows that copy. Neither is your own inspection.
Use this editorial reading order:
- Confirm the edition. Match the image title, piece-count option and product identifier where available.
- Inspect the broad arrangement. Can you follow repeated rows across more than one local patch?
- Check junctions. Do neighboring seams align, end at different points, or form clearly irregular groupings?
- Inspect the perimeter separately. Is the entire outside contour visible, or has the photograph cropped it away?
- Look for identifiable features. Record a figure-shaped piece or documented opening without generalizing to every piece.
- Record the missing evidence. If you cannot see seams, do not name a cut from the artwork.
Zooming can enlarge a photograph; it cannot restore detail that was never recorded. If the listing is unclear, ask the maker for the cut type and a representative image for that specific edition.
What belongs on a useful cut-inspection card?
Use three columns: documented, observed in the supplied image, and still unknown. This prevents a marketing statement from silently becoming a personal test result.

The record is deliberately modest. It can support choosing an orderly layout if that is what you enjoy. It cannot support “no false fits,” a completion-time promise, or a verdict that the maker's entire range performs identically.
For a second candidate, use the same fields even if the advertising emphasizes something different. Otherwise you risk comparing one puzzle's documented material with another puzzle's unverified praise.
How should cut type affect the final choice?
Use cut type to identify a preferred kind of attention. An orderly arrangement may appeal when you enjoy tracking rows; visibly varied outlines may appeal when identifying shapes is part of the attraction. Those are selection criteria, not a ranking of solver ability.
Then examine the image independently. Distinct objects, repeated motifs and broad similar-color areas present different visual information. The site's By Difficulty collection treats challenge as a separate question; a cut label alone should not decide it.
Fit deserves its own evidence too. Artifact distinguishes its Ecru line from standard Artifact puzzles partly by describing the pieces as closer-cut, alongside a surface-finish difference. Do not force a doubtful connection or modify a piece to make it fit. Follow the puzzle maker's handling guidance, and ask its support team about suspected defects. There is no need to lift, bend or toss an assembled puzzle to classify its layout. Cut appearance and handling performance are different questions.
The practical verdict: select the documented layout and features you want, verify the exact edition, and leave unknown fit characteristics unknown. A useful product description earns its adjectives by giving you something you can identify.
